Modern dry and/or canned food is often the cause of many health problems in dogs and cats. This is because it contains many inexpensive fillers, such as rice and grains.
These nutrients do not help dogs and cats develop a natural intestinal flora. The food is poorly digested because the enzymes that help digest food are lacking. In addition, problems with the pancreas can often occur.
The pancreas is not designed to produce large amounts of insulin to help process grains, which can contribute to diabetes. Australian veterinarian Ian Billinghurst therefore developed the BARF method.
